A long series of injuries has compromised the new adventure in the Sevens, forcing the former Wallabies captain to end his career

Australia: Michael Hooper (Ph. Sebastiano Pessina)

At 32, Michael Hooper says enough is enough. After missing out on the national Sevens squad preparing to play in the Olympics, the former Warathas flanker decided to abandon field activities altogether.

Last autumn Hooper announced the switch to the sevens version to attempt the Olympic adventure at the Paris 2024 games, but his goal was not achieved.

A series of injuries delayed his debut until April and he was only able to play two SVNS tournaments before suffering another groin injury, which effectively ruled him out of the Madrid final and caused him to hang up his boots on the nail.

Hooper was one of the most decorated players in Australian rugby history, captaining the Wallabies more than anyone else, leading the national team on 69 occasions. He won 125 caps in total, becoming the youngest centurion for the team in the gold jersey.

Michael Hooper’s words upon retirement

“What a rush! My Olympic journey is over, and with it, my Australian rugby career. To the Aussie Sevens team, I wish them all the best, as they have been a fantastic, helpful and talented group of athletes to be a part of. I am grateful to my family and friends for their unwavering support through everything. We have shared an incredible journey, full of experiences, challenges and unforgettable memories. Thank you,” Hooper said via a post on his Instagram account.

Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh responded: “He leaves a legacy that will be remembered as one of the greatest to wear the Wallabies jersey and a firm favourite with fans,” Waugh said in a statement. “Michael is incredibly respected here and around the world, and on behalf of Rugby Australia, I want to wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
