Drivers and union representatives of Turin’s taxi drivers met this morning in front of the prefecture in Piazza Castello, where they “presented their complaints to the prefect on the situation of rampant illegal activity in the city”. Meanwhile, the square was occupied by a few dozen taxis “as a sign of protest”.
“There are also illegal cars here in Turin which it is not clear whether they have insurance and licensing, but above all whether they have the technical conditions as vehicles to be able to transport people – explains Francesco Ammirati, representative of the Turin taxi drivers base committee – Then we have NCCs (rental service with driver, ed.) who travel from all parts of Italy, arrive from any region and behave as if they were taxi drivers” “Turin does not have a volume of trips to be able to withstand all this, – he continues – we who pay taxes and work twelve hours to keep ourselves afloat, the work is what it is, it’s little and we make do with it, but we deserve a little more respect.
“The night is the real drama – concludes Ammirati – no one does the checks, the difficult thing about illegal activity is that they have to be caught in the act while loading and unloading. Another thing to correct are articles 85 and 86 which sanction illegal workers and Ncc , the orientation of the justices of the peace towards those who were caught in the act was that after a week they returned their registration certificate and started working again”.
