Ameglia (La Spezia), 25 June 2024 – At 69 years old he had not yet lost his passion for his work. He, who was a man of the sea, a long-time seafarer, an expert on boats, had for years found his dimension in that garage on the bank of the Thin. One yesterday morning absurd tragedy it took his life away, while he was engaged in operations performed who knows how many hundreds of times. Is called Giovanni Guarascioand it’s the first workplace death of 2024 in the La Spezia area. The drama, shortly after 8.30 at CD Nautica, a storage and maintenance company for pleasure boats located in via Litoranea, in Fiumaretta. A company for which the 69-year-old had worked regularly for a long time, waiting to meet the requirements for his well-deserved retirement. The man was in the square, ready to take part in the operation moving a vessel. In a few seconds, the tragedy: the crane that was supposed to lift the boat, it tipped over on its sidewith the long arm that completely overwhelmed the worker. The rescue operations were immediate, activated by the same construction site, which brought to the scene in a few minutes the Delta2 medical car of 118 from Sarzana, the volunteers of the public assistance humanitas of Romito Magra, the firefighters and the carabinieri of Ameglia. The man’s conditions appeared critical from the beginning, due to the trauma. The 69-year-old was resuscitated on the spot, then, given the seriousness of the situation, the helicopter rescue of the 118 Tuscany was also alerted. The Pegaso helicopter lands in Fiumaretta, which in a few dozen minutes transported the man to the Cisanello hospital in Pisa.

It was during the flight that the worker’s condition worsened again, with the doctors at the Pisan hospital unable to do anything but confirm the man’s death. In the meantime, inspectors from the Prevention and Safety in the Workplace unit had arrived at the site of the tragedy and, in agreement with the prosecutor on duty Giacomo Gustavino, immediately placed the large crane was seized, to then collect the testimonies of some people, including the crane operator, with the aim of reconstructing the exact dynamics of the accident. In fact, the big medium has ended up under the lens: the objective is establish the causes which caused the crane to overturn and fatally hit Giovanni Guarascio with his arm. Among the hypotheses, still to be verified, is the possibility of a maneuvering errorheythe failure of one of the crane’s stabilizers. The news of Guarascio’s disappearance immediately spread throughout the Amegliese area, where the man was well known. He lived in Bocca di Magra, and in the past he was also the owner of a restaurant located in Ameglia. A volunteer involved in social work and a motorbike enthusiast, he leaves behind a son.
