«The pylon test is like a real transport»

«For us it will be a real transport». Word of the head engineer Sandro Rossi. In short, the test of the Dies Natalis pylon, the new Macchina di Santa Rosa designed by the architect Raffaele Ascenzi, is anything but a walk in the park. Sunday 7 July from the entrance to Piazza del Plebiscito and up to Piazza Verdi will be the litmus test for next 3 September.

«We chose that stretch – says Rossi – because of the overall dimensions. Because Dies Natalis is wider than the previous ones and the stretch of Corso Italia is the narrowest.” Precautions? «There are no details, we just have to go slowly to understand how to move. We already know well the points where there is little space – he continues – we just have to go as slowly as possible so as not to rub against the Machine”. The most critical and delicate point? «The one at Largo Cesare Battisti. There will be breaks like during September 3rd, where we have always made them. For us it is a real transport, only shorter. We are quite calm, the team is excited.”

The builder Mirko Fiorillo is preparing everything for the fateful date. «The machine will be assembled on Saturday – he explains – but we will start unloading the ballast on Friday». The truss test is done every time there is a new structure, before its debut. «It was usually carried out near the manufacturer’s warehouse at the time, since 2015 with the Facchini we decided to test it on the route». The test is entirely the responsibility of the manufacturer, for safety reasons it is not possible to start with a new structure with a closed box. «Dies Natalis will be half complete, then we will place the ballast in a scientific way. We weigh it first in the shed, then in the points where the allegories are missing the ballasts serve to simulate the weight of the Machine in the best possible way. Where there are two angels weighing 10 kilos each, for example, equivalent weights will be placed.” And at the end of the mini transport there will be a rich breakfast for all the porters, always offered by the manufacturer.

Meanwhile, Palazzo dei Priori has also begun to take countermeasures. Mayor Chiara Frontini has issued two ordinances to carry out the test safely, as happened in the section affected on 3 September, which concern traders and property owners. We ask «commercial businesses and the owners of vacant properties located on the ground floor in via Roma and Corso Italia to rotate or dismantle the spotlights mounted above the entrance door and flag signs, display cases and close any awnings, remove vases and planters no later than 12pm on 5 July”. Furthermore, traders who have them are asked to dismantle and remove “tables, chairs, umbrellas, vases and bollards, as well as all the material placed outside the shops, no later than 11.59pm on 6 July ». Otherwise the Municipality will proceed automatically and the fine will be between a minimum of 100 and a maximum of 300 euros.
