Third place for the Savona Sports Veterans team at the National Over 40 Veterans Football Championship which ended yesterday in Siena organized by the Unvs of Siena. The team from Savona, led by coach Felicino Vaniglia, beat the Tuscan team Volterra 5-2 in the final that awarded the bronze medal thanks to a brace from Simon Calligaris and centers from Oscar Salvatico, Sergio Panigo and Paolo Tessitore . The team from the Rinaldo Roggero section of the Veterani dello Sport of Savona entered the Tuscan final as reigning champions, having won the national championship last year, in September, at the “Ruffinengo” in Legino, beating 1-0 (goal by Oscar Salvatico) the Massa. The Savona team could have reached the final, but this time Lady Luck turned her back on the “Veterans”. In the first scheduled match, Savona won 3-1 over the Aquilonia team from Avellino with a brace from Salvatico and a solo from Merica. In the decisive match for access to the final (6 teams divided into two groups participated in the final of the national championship) Savona, deprived of captain Alessio Bisio, injured during the match against the Avellino team, was defeated 5-2 by Siena. For mister Felicino Vaniglia’s blue and white (the board of directors of the Veterans of Savona had decided on the color of the shirts in memory of Rinaldo Roggero, Savona player and first football Olympian to participate in the Olympics, those of 1920 in Aversa, and subsequently coach of the biancoblù, to whom the Unvs section is dedicated) Sergio Panigo, Emiliano Procopio and Davide Grippo scored.
