The Enna landfill could be among those chosen by the regional government for the waste emergency after the closure of the Lentini site which serves 174 municipalities on the island. Part of the waste could temporarily end up in the Enna plant, while the others would be destined for Siculiana and Gela. The reason for the closure of the Lentini landfill is the lack of authorizations from the Department of Territory and Environment and the environmental impact assessment of the Metropolitan City of Catania and the ARPA.

The president of Anci Sicily

“We await the signing of the extraordinary ordinance by the President of the Region, Renato Schifani, we believe that the alternatives could be Enna, Siculiana and Gela” says the president of Anci Sicily, Paolo Amenta, someone who has been raising the alarm for some time about the enormous costs of municipalities for waste disposal, especially in the Lentini landfill, whose administrators have increased the price, now around 400 euros per ton: a surge due to the costs of transferring waste off the island.

Municipal costs

“These costs risk undermining the extraordinary efforts of the Sicilian administrators, who have managed to progressively increase the percentages of separate waste collection throughout the island, bringing it to 65% in 274 municipalities out of 391” Amenta said last month during the hearing at the III Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.

The corrective maneuver

Furthermore, ANCI has long been pushing for the Region to give a contribution to the Municipalities to pay the extra waste costs. “The provision in the corrective measure of 50 million – said Paolo Amenta and Mario Emanuele Alvano, president and general secretary of the Association of Sicilian Municipalities – for the extra waste costs certainly represents a positive fact. We remind you that these resources were allocated thanks to the battle that ANCI Sicily has been carrying out since January 2024, when the decree of the General Director of the Regional Water and Waste Department was canceled (n. 1389 of 7 November 2023) which provided for a partial compensation for the extra costs incurred by the municipalities exclusively between the second half of 2022 and the first half of 2023. This cancellation created a real hole in the budgets”. “We now hope that the regional Parliament will approve the maneuver quickly so that the municipalities can use this contribution for the economic and financial plan and for the determination of the TARI 2024”.
