Bridge, the Strait of Messina at UniMe: “Minimal impact”

MESSINA – The University of Messina is alarmed by expropriations, temporary occupations and subservience for the bridge over the Strait. The university citadel at Annunziata and Papardo are in fact involved in the operations linked to the great work. But the “Sretto di Messina” company tends to downplay the concern of UniMe which, with a resolution of the Board of Directors and the Academic Senate, asked for “alternative solutions” to be brought “to the attention of the contracting company”.

The intervention at the Annunziata University Center, “no impact on the Olympic swimming pool”

The company’s press office writes Strait of Messina: “Within the Annunziata University Centre, parcel 1659, sheet 99, n. floor 424, is the subject of expropriation for 83 square meters out of a total of 9229 (equal to less than 1% of the entire extension of the parcel). This intervention is necessary for the construction of the trench within which the roadway will be built for the connection between the Annunziata junction and the existing road system. As shown in the attached plan, the 83 m2 portion falling within the parcel has no impact on the built-up area of the Olympic swimming pool and will therefore not cause any compromise to swimming or other activities. Probably in the executive planning phase it would also be possible to intervene through containment works which would allow us to avoid the expropriation of even this small portion of land”.

In essence, the company denies the impact on the Olympic swimming pool, talks about expropriation in a very small part and announces that it will be possible to avoid expropriation as well.

Papardo University Centre, “the impacts on university activities will be minimised”

As regards the Papardo University Centre, “the main access of the “Cerisi” building (Centre of excellence, research, innovation, large structures and infrastructures, ed.) on the Papardo stream is not closed”. And again: “The construction sites necessary for the construction of the ventilation shaft of the Papardo station fall on the internal roads of the Campus. This construction site forecast, as already widely discussed with the general contractor Eurolink, is not definitive in nature and will be optimized during the executive planning in order to minimize the impacts on university activities”.

“The centralized library will not be involved and the vibrations will not affect the structural stability”

The press office of the Strait of Messina continues: “There is no involvement of the building that houses the Centralized Library: the intervention for the construction of a ventilation chimney is outside the grounds of the building. In relation to the rumored risk of “vibrations that could affect structural stability”, following the crossing of the areas of the engineering faculty in Papardo and the baseball field in Annunziata, it is specified that the excavations will be carried out with the most recent technologies of excavation (Tbm) at a depth of 30 meters in the first case and even 80 in the second case”.
