Trieste: Sailboat dismasts, Coast Guard intervenes to save three women

This morning, Sunday 23 June, three young Slovenian women while sailing off the coast of Punta Sdobba, launched a distress call via VHF and via DSC (Digital Selective Call) following the dismasting suffered by the unit they were traveling on, a vessel sailing vessel of approximately 9 meters flying the Slovenian flag, probably due to the strong gusts of Bora that have been blowing since last night lash the Gulf of Trieste.

The occupants, once reassured of the emergency intervention of the Harbor Office, awaited the arrival of the rescue unit by anchoring and promptly putting on their life jackets. In the meantime, as a precaution, the Operations Room/VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) Center of the Port Authority of Trieste asked a nearby unit, the tug “Med Silver”, engaged in sea trials, to reach the dismasted vessel and to verify the current situation in the first instance.

After just 30 minutes from the initial call, the SAR CP 881 patrol boat of the Trieste Coast Guard reached the location of the accident and immediately welcomed on board the occupants of the damaged unit, cold and visibly shaken but not in need of medical intervention, to then bring them back to land safely in the port of Monfalcone.
