After the sudden closure of the Lentini landfill yesterday, the Region is working to find solutions that prevent the explosion of a health and hygiene crisis in the almost 200 municipalities that deliver waste to the Sicula transport landfill.
An emergency meeting was held yesterday at the Prefecture of Catania, to avoid the suspension of the harvest, just as the summer heat explodes.
At the end, the regional energy councilor Roberto Di Mauro released a statement.
“We are working to allow disposal at other sites.
An extraordinary measure to allow the temporary transfer of waste, first destined for the Lentini Tmb and then to other landfills, to further plants on the island, thus overcoming the disposal difficulties for numerous municipalities”.
Di Mauro, who was in close contact with the President of the Region, Renato Schifani throughout yesterday, announced a meeting this morning with Arpa Sicilia and the ASPs of Messina, Catania, Syracuse, Ragusa and Trapani to obtain the preparatory authorizations for drafting the authorization decree.
“The judiciary’s provision came unexpectedly, so an extraordinary act is needed immediately which we are working on and which should be defined by tomorrow”.
The company that manages the landfill in the Coda Volpe district of Lentini has been under judicial administration since 2020 as part of the Mazzetta Sicula investigation.
It was the judicial administrators who communicated the suspension of the activity yesterday.
The decision came following a provision from the investigating judge of the Court of Catania after the regional Energy Department, which denied authorization to continue the activity pending the definition of the verification requests for the environmental impact assessment , for which the assessment of the non-existence of health, environmental and cultural risks of the metropolitan city of Catania and of the ARPA is awaited
