MARTINSICURO. «The construction of the cycle/pedestrian bridge over the Tronto becomes reality». The mayor of Martinsicuro announced it Massimo Vagnoni and the municipal councilor for public works Monica Persiani after the delivery of the works was carried out on Thursday: a step which means that the construction site should be installed at the beginning of July, which will start from the Abruzzo side. «Now the bridge over the Tronto», add the city administrators, «is no longer a chimera and in about a year it will be a reality. We want to thank the regional councilor Umberto D’Annuntiis for the important contribution given to this infrastructure that the town has been waiting for for many years.”
The future bridge should have the appearance of the keel of a boat, drawing inspiration from the seafaring vessels that are part of the history of the two banks of the Tronto, of San Benedetto and Martinsicuro. The two cities divided by the river, as well as the two provinces and the two regions, will finally be united by the new bridge which will allow people to cross the Tronto by bicycle and on foot, avoiding the dangers of state road 16. The bridge will be 130 meters long and will be based on three spans, two close to the banks and one in the center of the river bed, and will connect the Sentina nature reserve, in the Marche region, to the “Tronto river” nature trail in the Abruzzo region. From a hydraulic point of view, the bridge structure can be implemented if necessary.
On Thursday the keys to the works were handed over to the Sicilian company that won the contract in the presence of the two mayors Massimo Vagnoni and Antonio Spazzafumo (San Benedetto del Tronto), by Francesco Baldelli, councilor for roads and infrastructures of the Marche Region, and of Umberto D’Annuntiis, counterpart councilor of the Abruzzo Region, who commented: «This is a day of celebration. Abruzzo has been waiting for this work for a long time and today we are also putting an end to controversies artfully mounted during the electoral campaign, when we heard someone say that this bridge would never be built. Instead, the bridge will be built thanks to the commitment of the Marche Region and the Abruzzo Region. With the construction of this bridge we will ensure that our 136 km of Adriatic Cycle Route can be connected with the Marche region in order to develop those forms of sustainable tourism that many people are turning towards today and which also represent an effective means of deseasonalisation”. Meanwhile, work continues in the Truentino municipality to create the connection from the seafront cycle path to the entrance to the bridge. The “Tronto river” will not be passable for safety reasons until the work is completed.
