Biniam Girmay enters the history of the Tour de France. The Turin stage is all about him, managing to get the better of Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny) in a hard-fought sprint. But also conditioned by fall which occurred just under three kilometers from the finish line and had a significant impact on the final, splitting the group into several sections.
A somersault occurred on a straight line, on the right side of the road. Among the most involved, Jasper Philipsen: the Alpecin-Deceuninck sprinter, the obvious favorite in these situations, was thus unable to have his say in the sprint, finishing only in one hundred and eighteenth place at cruising speed to avoid further problems.
But many were involved in the fall. Among them, it was noted Stephen Williams (Israel Premier-Tech), Alexis Renard (Cofidis) e Jake Stewart (Israel Premier-Tech) menter other fast wheels like Dylan Groenewegen and Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla) were indirectly involved, as well as Mark Cavendish (Astana-Qazaqstan).
Many others were instead forced to put their foot on the ground to avoid damage. And this is the case of Tadel Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike), arrived behind the leaders but with the same time as the event occurred in the last five kilometres. In this way Richard Carapaz took advantage of it, wearing the yellow jersey thanks to the placement game despite everyone having the same time in the general.
