Legnano Basket: 10 years ago the promotion to the Silver League, the story of that unforgettable summer

Ten years ago the triumph signed by Legnano Basket in Cervia. In the summer of 2014 at PalaCervia, the red tide literally overwhelmed Latina (62-58) conquering the silver league, which later became the A2 series. A victory that the then coach Ferrari defined it in an interview: “magical”. A historic step up in category sought and desired by the large Knights family led by president Marco Tajana which many still remember today. A sporting moment experienced and told on the front line also by the editorial staff of LegnanoNews and which today, Saturday 22 June, the Legnano Basket club remembers with emotion.

It was summer 2014. A hot summer, but on the Riviera, in Cervia, the heat is usually more pleasant too. For the Knights, it was not the classic week by the sea for summer tan, but rather the end of a tour de force that had seen them play almost 40 matches of the season and emerge as a qualified team from the northern grouping of the Playoffs for access to the A2 of 2014/2015. The first match with Tortona was not memorable. Tortona has always been a bête noire: out of 10 challenges at B and A2 level, Legnano managed to win only one… and it wasn’t the one in Cervia. The formula of those finals had the classic bittersweet aspect; two semi-finals with the two winners immediately promoted (Tortona and Scafati) and, the following day, two finals in which one match was completely platonic, while the losing final could “give” the last available place to the second national series.

The night between the defeat against Tortona and the match against Latina, for those who were there, was not a calm night. After an exhilarating journey in many places, after playoffs with painless defeats which, ironically, had strengthened the idea of Legnano being ready for the big leap, the defeat against Tortona had thrown everyone into total despair. The classic last resort seems further away than the shore for the Titanic castaways and in the minds of the players and staff, a lot of anger for a match played not at the level of the Legnano seen for 9 months.

On 22 June, after a classic shooting session that served more to loosen the head than the legs, the Knights showed up on the pitch in the hot afternoon in Romagna, after having seen Scafati triumph over Tortona for the 2013 Serie B Champion title. /2014. The match immediately went well for Legnano. Arrigoni in the “escape to victory” version was uncatchable for the Romans. Tavernelli, Milani, Penserini of the metronomes who didn’t hold back when there was a point to add; Casagrande also defends against the commentators and the organization’s stewards, with Cazzaniga surgical, Navarini with the bravado of 20 years, all masterfully “led” by captain Federico Maiocco, the only veteran of the previous season. Among the players on the roster also a young Alessandro Guidi, Davide Maiocchi and an unfortunate Dario Borroni, protagonist until mid-season where an injury kept him out until the following season.

Around 8.00 pm in the evening, with the commentary of the voice of their friend Mario Castelli, the Knights as “underdogs”, as underestimated, wrote the most beautiful of Legnano’s sporting exploits. The 62-58 victory wins DNA (Serie A2) for the first time in history.

In the image the triumph with Marco Tajana and Maurizio Basilico raising the commemorative plaque with Mattia Ferrari, who arrived in the summer and triumphed the following summer, evidently a season that brought him great good. A party with dozens of red and white fans who followed the team not only in Cervia but for the whole country season, glorious and unforgettable. Ferrari, again with Tajana and Basilico, were also the protagonists of the following 4 seasons of the Knights who also participated in the playoffs to reach Serie A1. A story that the Knights still try to rewrite today and which, for one day, they want to remember with a touch of emotion, emotion and certainly pride.
It was summer 2014. June 22nd.
