The Orientation School of the Iuss of Pavia, the Higher University School, will be held from 24 to 27 June at Palazzo Broletto (in the photo, ed.). This free residential event is aimed at 4th year upper secondary school students and offers a rich and varied program of lessons, seminars and workshops, with the aim of stimulating intellectual curiosity and providing a preview of academic life .

The activities of the Orientation School will begin on Monday 24 June at 2.30 pm, with welcome greetings from the Rector Riccardo Pietrabissa, the Vice-Rector delegate for incoming orientation Andrea Tiengo and Paola Bernardi, President of the College Council. The day will continue with two lessons held by professors of the IUSS School: Andrea Moro, neurolinguist with “The brain and impossible languages: learning, talking machines and biology” and Mario Martina, coordinator of the national doctorate in sustainable development and climate change with “Alla search for sustainable progress”.

The next morning, participants will have the opportunity to participate in two interdisciplinary discussions: the figure of the English scientist John Michell will be traced, three centuries after his birth, by Roberto Nascimbene, seismic engineer, and the astrophysicist Paolo Esposito, while Giulia Piredda and Giulia Mattavelli will talk about emotions from a philosophical and neuropsychological point of view. The program of activities will subsequently develop with practical workshops and debates in small groups, which will allow participants to explore in depth topics such as the integration between virtual reality and electroencephalogram, the relationship between mind and language, the importance of taxation in the transition ecology and the frontiers of wearable biosensors. On Wednesday 26 June, a session open to the public dedicated to the contribution of female scientists to scientific and technological development will open, with interventions by experts such as Ilaria Canobbio, biologist from the University of Pavia and Roberta Fulci, of Radio3Scienza, who will focus in particular on the disciplines mathematics. In the evening, at the Collegio Nuovo, the speech by astrophysicist Patrizia Caraveo will highlight how the role of women in the exploration of the Solar System is by no means marginal.

The Orientation School will end on the morning of Thursday 27 June, with practical activities illustrated by researchers and doctoral students of the Iuss School, in the field of information technology applied to biology, climate change, seismic engineering and observation of the Earth from space .

“This orientation school – explains the prof. Andrea Tiengo, Vice Rector delegate for incoming orientation – has the ambition of showing students unexpected connections between different disciplines and little-known nuances of some subjects learned at school. This will certainly help them choose their future path more consciously, without being influenced by stereotypes and prejudices.”
