AVERSA FIRE, DIOXINS AND FURANS ABOVE REFERENCE VALUES IN THE 1ST DETECTION CYCLE – Casertasera.it

AVERSA.– The first test report issued by the dioxin laboratory of the UOC Contaminated Sites and Remediation today is available, concerning the determination of dioxins and furans (PCDD-PCDF) in air sampled on 19-20 June 2024. With reference to the aforementioned report of testing, it is known, as is known, that dioxins and furans are normally determined in ambient air in the event of accidental events, especially in conjunction with fires affecting production activities, to which the case in question is comparable. However, there are no reference limits imposed by legislation for the concentration of dioxins in ambient air; a reference value currently used by the scientific community is that proposed by the Laenderausschuss fuer Immssionsschutz (LAI – Germany), equal to 0.15 pg/Nmc [I TEQ]. The value detected during the sampling in question (equal to 1.84 pg/Nmc [I TEQ]) is higher than said reference value. It should be underlined that the dioxin values - usually higher in the first cycle of measurements – tend to decrease quite quickly in the subsequent phases.

Please refer to the previous press releases released on 19 and 21 June for a complete picture of the activities carried out by the Agency in relation to this event and the fire that hit the Camaldoli area in Naples. Further results of the ongoing investigations will be released as soon as they are available.
