Matera: solemn commendations to Maffia, Gravina and Garzone – News

The City Council of Matera today awarded three solemn commendations to citizens who have distinguished themselves in the world, ennobling the image of the “City of Stones”: Dante Maffia, Filippo Gravina and Cristina Garzone.

“Everyone – it is written in a note released by the Municipality’s press office – has been able to immortalise, handing down to future generations places and faces, identifying symbols of the territory and of a thousand-year history”.

Maffia, “poet, essayist novelist of undisputed international fame, is the author of publications such as the ‘Matera Elegies’ and the volume ‘Matera and a woman’, contributing to spreading the feeling of profound connection with the city of Matera, describing the most salient and genuine features that characterize the history and the inhabitants, receiving countless awards including, in March 2004, the Gold Medal for merit in culture and art and in December 2010, the Giacomo Matteotti Award for literature”.

Gravina, “who emigrated to Canada in the 1980s, played a central role within the Italian-Canadian community and beyond. He founded several organizations whose objective has always been to promote education, culture and integration of newcomers into the Canadian social fabric.

Garzone is a “photographer, author of a book on the Madonna della Bruna. Throughout her career she has received countless awards, including in April 2020 the highest honor in international photography from the Maitre de la Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographique (Mfiap), resulting, still today, the first and only Italian female photographer to have achieved such an important title”.
