An Ilva match saved a thousand sailors who disembarked from Trieste

They went down to La Maddalena to watch an Ilva match and escaped the sinking of the Trieste

The 10 April 1943 L’Ilva was playing against a team from Marina and a thousand soldiers disembarked from Trieste to watch the race. No one could have imagined that precisely in those moments the mermaids began to ring to signal the arrival of American planes. Those who landed in La Maddalena to enjoy the match saved their lives and saw thecruiser Trieste sink in front of Palau, under the weight of the bombs.

The match was played in Piazza Comando (Umberto I according to the official toponymy) and on 24 June there will be a re-enactment. On the occasion of the “Pink Ribbon Tour” of the Navy there will be a challenge of beach soccer on the dock Punta Chiara, near the ’43 playing field. L’Ilvamaddalena will play against a representative of Non-commissioned officer schools of the Navy. The appointment is Monday 24 June at 5pm, with free admission.
