M5 extension to Monza: green light for environmental authorizations

The Lombardy Region obtained a favorable outcome in the Services Conference for the release of the single authorization provision, essential for the extension of the M5 underground line to Monza. This project will involve the municipalities of Milan, Sesto San Giovanni, Cinisello Balsamo and Monza.

“With the conclusion of the Services Conference and the release of the Single Regional Authorization Provision, we have ensured a fundamental step for the project development for the purposes of the contracting out of a work which is absolutely strategic for Lombardy,” he declared Giorgio Maione, Councilor for the Environment and Climate of the Lombardy Region. “We want to make our region run and offer an opportunity for sustainable mobility on one of the busiest routes in Lombardy.”

Councilor Terzi: “First Metro line to connect two provincial capitals”

Claudia Terzicouncilor for Infrastructures and Public Works of the Lombardy Region, explained: “With the realization of the extension of the line from the current terminus of Bignami in Monza, the M5 line will be there first MM line that connects two provincial capitals, Milan and Monza. The extension intervention will guarantee important new opportunities for the mobility of people in a metropolitan area characterized by a high density of residential and productive activities.”

Project details

The extension of the M5, which will maintain the same infrastructure standards as the existing section between San Siro and Bignami, will extend for approximately 12.6 km with 11 new stations until the new terminus at the Institutional Center of Monza Brianza. The route will cross the municipalities of Sesto San Giovanni and Cinisello Balsamo, and includes the construction of a warehouse-workshop in Monzacapable of hosting up to 60 trains. A new terminus of the M1 line will also be built at the ‘Cinisello-Monza’ station, facilitating interchange between the lines.

Investments and financing

The total investment for the M5 extension is 1,296 million euros, with 931 million euros coming from state resources, 283 million euros allocated by the Lombardy Region and the remainder 82 million euros by the municipalities involved.
