Fabio Romito, center-right candidate for the Bari municipal elections, recently suffered serious threats via social media. The offending message, sent on his Facebook page, read: “By shooting you you would give me mental and economic relief, since you will surely become one of those parasites who suck my blood”. This threatening phrase, which Romito immediately reported to Digos, is the latest episode of a poisoned climate that characterizes the tail end of the electoral campaign.
Romito stated that throughout the election campaign he was labeled as a candidate of the League, despite being supported by the united center-right. This has fueled a series of political attacks, especially regarding the decree on autonomy, originating from the Title V reform wanted by the center-left. Romito underlined that this reform represents an opportunity to overcome the gaps between the services offered in the regions of Southern and Northern Italy, such as healthcare.
Despite his attempts to clarify the issue, attacks from his political opponent and the media have multiplied, generating a climate of tension. This has led to an increase in offensive messages received, culminating in the latest one, which has alarmed those managing his Facebook page.
“The situation has become unsustainable“, said Romito. “I decided to denounce not only the author of the message, but also the climate of hatred that was created around my candidacy.“
