A highly complex operation at the Madonna delle Grazie Hospital saved a mother and her little girl

In Matera, a multidisciplinary team successfully performed a cesarean section and removal of a tumor, allowing the birth of a baby girl and preserving the mother’s health.

In the Madonna delle Grazie Hospital in Matera, a highly complex operation was performed by the Gynecology and Obstetrics team directed by Giuseppe Trojano, head of the Maternal-Child Department, in collaboration with the Simple Operational Units of High-Risk Pregnancy and Medical Oncology and the Complex Operational Units of Paediatrics, Radiology and Anesthesia of the Madonna delle Grazie.

“During routine first trimester exams – says Dr. Trojano – the 39-year-old woman, in her first pregnancy, was diagnosed with locally advanced cervical cancer. Despite the enormous risks related to the disease, the patient decided to continue with the pregnancy. After an interdisciplinary consultation and a further conversation with the patient, it was decided to proceed with chemotherapy before the operation, which resulted in a partial regression of the lesion and therefore a great possibility for the patient to undergo surgery. A caesarean section was therefore planned at 35 weeks of pregnancy, which led to the birth of a baby girl, weighing 2,460 grams.”

The cesarean section was followed by the very delicate operation of radical hysterectomy and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy with preservation of the ovaries, taking into account the patient’s age. The operation was successful and, even in the post-operative period, both mother and little Francesca are in excellent health.

“Once again – comments the Commissioner of the local health authority of Matera, Maurizio Friolo – the multidisciplinary approach and the competence of the doctors of the departments involved have allowed us to achieve an excellent result, despite the complexity and rarity of the clinical picture. Thanks, obviously, go to all the medical and nursing staff as well as to all the other healthcare workers who, in various capacities, made it possible to achieve this positive result. To the new mother, the little girl and her family, I wish a speedy recovery but above all my best wishes for a happy event.”
