Art, Culture, Peace and Fraternity in the Ecumenical Path in Catania

by Piero Quinci

The ecumenical journey in Catania is enriched by the sharing of life and initiatives proposed by individual Churches, such as the extraordinary event of “Expo & Note” promoted by the Evangelical Lutheran Community of Sicily. The event, under the patronage of the German Ministry of Culture and in synergy with the Ecumenical Council of Catania, will be held on Saturday 22 June 2024 in the Church of San Nicolò l’Arena at 4 pm with the opening of an exhibition of painting “The paradise rediscovered” by the artist Judith Boy and at 5.30 pm with the lyrical concert “Et in terra pax” of two tenors and a bass interspersed with organ pieces.

Judith Boy’s “Paradise Rediscovered” is a painting exhibition and contains works that show, sometimes even in a cheerful and light-hearted way, how we can save everyday paradise and our future.

The ten plagues of Egypt are painted on it, demonstrating the urgency of changing our behavior towards all living beings and nature.

Center and fulcrum of the opera concert “Et in terra pax” are: Missa sine Nomine by Ludovico Viadana and Missa a tre Voci in A by Antonio Lotti, with the artists Joachim Szepanski (tenor), Vincenzo Lisi (tenor), Gianfranco Giordano (bass), Paolo Cipolla (organ), Franco Lazzaro (organ).

This special and extraordinary event of high artistic level, offered by the Evangelical Lutheran Community of Sicily, is open to everyone to share a journey of brotherhood and rediscover the “everyday paradise” together.

The ecumenical journey of the Churches of Catania, which began in 1978, is full of moments of reflection, prayer and common initiatives on the shared themes of Justice, Peace and the protection of Creation.
