PALERMO – “The Sicilian agricultural sector is on its knees. The declaration of a national state of emergency due to the drought in Sicily must be followed by facts and, above all, adequate resources”, he declares Fabio Veneziaregional deputy of the PD and Vice President of the Budget Commission at ARS.

“The significant reduction in the water capacity of the Sicilian reservoirs for irrigation purposes is not allowing a stable supply of water and this is compromising the planning of agricultural activity”.

“For these reasons, through a specific parliamentary interpellation, we asked the regional government to eliminate the fees for the irrigation benefit of the land reclamation consortia for 2024”.

The primary and secondary pipelines are in a poor state of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance with serious dispersion of the already lacking water resource and the long drought that hit Sicily has brought agricultural production to its knees with poor harvests during the current year with serious damage to the agricultural and livestock sector.

“Some farms – continues the Enna deputy – although they receive water from the Reclamation Consortium, they cannot have it based on the needs of their crops but only on a calendar basisthat is, when the consortium is in a position to distribute it”.

“And this creates countless inconveniences in programming and production. Just yesterday in the Budget Committee we proposed and approved, together with other deputies, an amendment that suspends the collection of the roles of the reclamation consortia for irrigation benefits for 2024“.

“We will continue to fight with seriousness and commitment – concludes Venezia – the Sicilian agricultural world is grappling with an unprecedented crisis”.
