“We are pleased that the councilor of the Municipality of Siena Vanna Giunti, in the press conference for the presentation of the project ‘For a Good Government of Tourism in Siena 2024-2030’, recognized that there is a problem regarding rents tourism – declares the general secretary of the provincial Filcams CGIL Mariano Di Gioia – but what worries us is the approach with which it will deal with the problem, different from that adopted by Florence, but a mystery for the trade union organizations that deal with workers who operate in city tourism.

We don’t know how the Sienese municipal administration wants to deal with the problem – continues the secretary of the union of tertiary, tourism and service workers of Filcams Cgil Siena on tourist rentals – while we are aware that the city of Florence, through a council resolution, the first in Italy, prohibited the allocation of new residential properties in the historic center and in the area subject to UNESCO restrictions to short-term tourist rentals and provided for the elimination of the IMU on second homes for three years for all those owners who decide to give up short-term rentals and return to the ordinary regime; perhaps the Councilor could start right here: prohibit the proliferation of new apartments for this purpose within the UNESCO perimeter.

We now believe that a new social model can no longer be postponed for Siena that supports the return to living in the historic center for families and young couples, for the many university students who struggle to find a room or for seasonal workers who work in the city’s accommodation facilities – continues the general secretary of the Filcams CGIL provincial of Siena Di Gioia – but above all, a new fiscal approach is necessary that encourages the owners of buildings to use their homes for residential purposes. We will never tire of reiterating that the system that is advancing penalizes hotel structures and creates precarious work, by not distributing resources to workers in the sector.

Filcams Cgil of Siena has its vision of the city – concludes the trade unionist -, a Siena made of social responsibility, which supports the territory, work and workers in a sustainable way. We hope to be received by the municipal administration as trade union categories in the sector together with the confederations, to give our contribution and be listened to before any possible choice that the council is preparing to make”.
