Paolo Sottocorona tries to paint a picture of the great heat present in Italy. The La7 meteorologist, connecting during today’s episode of Omnibus, shows the map representing winds and temperatures at 850 millibars, the altitude at which the temperatures are checked, whether they rise or fall, because at that altitude there is theoretically no differences between day and night. And here is the situation: “There is an isotherm, that is, a line that joins points that have the same temperature, and it is an isotherm of 24°, 24° at 1500 meters is a lot, because they correspond to the ground at temperatures that fluctuate around to 34. Then there is a warm blast, because there are southern winds, south then southwest, which bring this area very hot and also very humid. So the effects are those that we have already seen this morning, that is to say this cloudiness that covers the entire Tyrrhenian Sea, because it covers Sardinia, Corsica and overlooks the Tyrrhenian coasts, while in the other regions the skies are predominantly clear. They are often clouds, that is, a fairly compact gray sky, which means that they are stratified clouds, therefore not those with vertical development, they do not give intense phenomena, they could give some brief rain and here in this area there could be the famous promised sand or threatened in recent days.”

We then move on to the weather forecast day by day: “The forecast for today, Wednesday 19 June, saw this gray arriving from the west, of course there is certainly more at the moment, but as regards the rains, apart from a few small trace in Sardinia but just barely, the north-west areas, Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta in the afternoon with some precipitation. In the other areas there will be clear or cloudy skies, because those clouds will continue to move on for a while and could also take over other areas of the central south, but always with that type of cloud cover. Then tomorrow, Thursday 20 June, the north-west areas, Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta above all, but also partly upper Lombardy, with some slightly more intense phenomena in the afternoon. There certainly is no problem of high temperatures there, while in the center and south the trend in the next few hours is certainly clear or cloudy skies, but with high temperatures. On Friday 21 June we have this tendency towards worsening, because here it is precisely a worsening because it is not only an afternoon activity which takes over the north-west and then also reaches the central part of the Alps, also the eastern part, therefore a completely different type of weather in the north. That of the center and south, despite some traces of precipitation, remains stable on the warm side.”

Sottocorona finally focuses on the maximum temperatures expected for today: “In some areas we are at temperatures that can exceed 34-35 degrees, yesterday this only happened in Puglia, in the province of Lecce, in other areas, even in the south , the values were still around 30-32. Today higher temperatures are expected, 35 maybe 36, then a few more peaks in Sardinia, part of the centre, especially the south and overlooking the hot areas. This will continue for at least 48 hours, even slightly northward. The temperature trend is still increasing, slightly in the north yet quite marked in the center and south, we are talking about at least 2 degrees higher than today, where temperatures are already high… In Sardinia even slightly stronger increases”.
