Let’s summarize all the victories achieved by Catania in the last season. After having focused on the previous successes obtained, we now return to the 1-0 inflicted on Benevento last April 27th. Rossazzurri fresh from the bad defeat in Sorrento and who, coinciding with the last day of the championship, secured their salvation by guaranteeing participation in the playoffs.
The first scoring opportunity was produced by Catania, with a nice shot taken by Celli in the 9th minute and it was blocked by the goalkeeper for a corner. On the corner kick, Bouah’s header hits the crossbar. He continues to push Catania. Deviation by Di Carmine and great clearance by Manfredini (12′), but the referee stops everything having recognized a foul. Sounds like a good time for the Elephant. Shortly afterwards Cicerelli catches the ball in the area and finishes over the crossbar (17′). Subsequently, however, confusion increases and tension tends to prevail among the red and blue ranks. Because the minutes pass and the goal doesn’t arrive, in the meantime Turris breaks the deadlock in Brindisi. A bit of frenzy and confusion sets in.
In the 28th minute, a great chance for the Giallorossi team: perfect assist from Masciangelo for Bolsius, who at the height of the penalty spot, all alone, makes a sensational mistake by kicking wide. Then, great save by Furlan on Karic’s safe shot (35′). Catania blocked, mutters the “Massimino” who asks more from his favorites. Just before half-time the Rossazzurri came back to life. In the 38th minute, a good opportunity for Catania: first a great closure to stop Welbeck from two steps, then Manfredini surpasses himself to block Di Carmine’s tap-in. In the 45th minute the goal that decides the match arrives:
Cianci takes a first shot which crashes against Viscardi but then has a second chance and doesn’t miss with his left foot, putting her in the corner. Goal that explodes the “Massimino”.
In the second half it was a more mentally free Catania who goes in search of doubling. In the 55th minute, an excellent action by Cicerelli, on the left, the ball in the center of the area, a violent blow by Cianci and the ball goes just wide. The former Taranto player insists with an oversized header (60′). Cicerelli was very active and in the 67th minute he crossed into the area for the insertion of Bouah who however slipped and deflected it out. In the final, the newly entered Ciano creates some prerequisites of danger going forward. Thrill for Catania especially in the 88th minute, when Ciano chipped the crossbar directly from a free kick. Benevento was insidious in another couple of circumstances but Catania, at the end of 6 minutes of added time, managed to take it home.
