«Hi Loris, today you would have become an adult, an important age, much desired by children, a goal for many new things, such as a driving license, a car… but, unfortunately, I can only think and imagine it». Thus Andrea Stival, in a letter to La Sicilia.it, recalls that his son Loris Stival would have turned 18 today, the child from Santa Croce Camerina, in the Ragusa area, killed on 29 November 2014, when he was 8 years old, by his mother Veronica Panarello sentenced to 30 years in prison for murder and concealment of a corpse.

Dad’s letter

«My thoughts – adds the father in the letter posted on the newspaper’s website – are always alive even if I know you are no longer here, but I want to always remember you with your smile from when we played together. On this birthday of yours, together with your little brother we will stop to look at the sky so that we can see all the stars shine and I mean all of them, because I am sure that from up there you will be celebrating together with your angel friends. Between a tear and a smile. Happy birthday Loris.”

The mother sentenced to 30 years

Veronica Panarello’s 30-year prison sentence became final on 21 November 2019 after the Supreme Court declared inadmissible the appeal presented by the woman against the sentence of the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Catania which on 5 July 2018 had confirmed the first degree sentence issued on 17 October 2016 by the Gup of Ragusa, Andrea Reale, at the conclusion of a trial celebrated with the abbreviated procedure. The child was strangled with plastic ties in the family home in Santa Croce Camerina, in the Ragusa area. The body was later found in a gully. The woman said she had taken him to school, but she was denied by the surveillance camera videos and she then changed her story several times, but always proclaiming herself innocent. (HANDLE).
