Drought, Coldiretti Molise relaunches the idea of artificial reservoirs

CAMPOBASSO – At a time when it is necessary to rationalize the use of water for the benefit of companies and citizens, Coldiretti Molise reiterates the need to create as soon as possible a network of small artificial reservoirs, throughout the territory, for the collection of Rainwater remains at just 11% in Italy today.

This would allow, underlines the Organization, to guarantee water for civil uses, for agricultural production and to generate clean energy.

The scarcity of available water, specifies Coldiretti, is however attributable not only to climate change but too often also to sieve networks which considerably disperse even the little available water. “The problem – states the regional President of Coldiretti Molise, Claudio Papa – is national, which is why climate change must be at the center of interest in a country like Italy which passes from one emergency to another, or from periods of drought to violent hailstorms up to real water bombs which wash away the land and increase the risks of hydrogeological instability, already extremely widespread in our region”.

“Guaranteeing farmers the possibility of irrigating their fields – states the Director of Coldiretti, Aniello Ascolese – is today also a priority to achieve the objective of food sovereignty with the increase in Made in Italy production, the reduction of dependence on foreign countries and the supply of high quality food products at the right price”.

Animal husbandry is also suffering enormously from the shortage of water, as demonstrated by the recent protests held in Sicily where farmers were forced to slaughter their livestock due to lack of water and fodder, the latter having dried up in the field or not. reached maturity due to drought. A problem made enormously worse by the undisputed presence of wild boars in the area (over 40 thousand are estimated in Molise) which systematically devastate the fields, destroying every type of crop. Finally, particular attention deserves the analysis of water costs for livestock which, although mitigated compared to the tariffs applied for domestic uses, do not take due account of the company realities where the volumes of water are extremely higher, deserving a intervention to reduce the tariffs applied.
