The summer season is about to come into its own with high temperatures which, as is known, can cause illness or reduce the worker’s attention span, increasing the risk of accidents.
For these reasons, the environmental hygiene sector of the FP CGIL of Ragusa invites the mayors and administrators of the municipalities, in the exercise of their institutional prerogatives and in order to prevent serious dangers that can threaten citizens – workers – to issue ordinances, which in relation to the weather forecasts, block the activities of the Environmental Hygiene sector in the time slot where it is expected, in relation to the Sias Civil Protection bulletins, to exceed the temperatures established by law.
“For years we have been fighting, comment Nunzio Fernandez, general secretary of the FP CGIL of Ragusa and Graziana Stracquadanio, head of Environmental Hygiene of the FP CGIL of Ragusa, to increase the level of sensitivity on the issue of heat during the summer months in workplaces with direct exposure to air in the sun. The issue has turned into a real emergency, which despite our repeated awareness campaigns, useful for raising the level of attention, have not given us (data in hand) the desired results in terms of safety and prevention.
Regarding the recognition of redundancy payments for meteorological events, it is very clear: when temperatures reach 35 degrees centigrade, in the absence of organizational action capable of mitigating the risk within construction sites, work activities must be stopped.
In 2023, several Sicilian municipalities produced the first municipal restrictive ordinances for our sector. In May 2024, the protocol is being finalized within the Sicily Region which invites all the mayors of the municipalities in the Sicilian territory “… so that they work to issue specific ordinances that prohibit the carrying out of all those activities exposed to thermal risk… ..”
