“Forbidden to feed wild boars”: the mayor of Savona signs an ordinance

Savona. “Given the increasingly frequent sightings of wild boars both in residential areas and outside the center and given that their presence is also induced by the fact that they are fed in an uncontrolled manner” we would like to remind you that “it is forbidden for anyone to provide food and food waste to wild boars and all wild animals”.

This is the main content of the ordinance signed this morning by the mayor of Savona, Marco Russo, which refers to the municipal regulation on civil coexistence, which already includes a ban on giving food to wild animals for hygiene reasons or when this creates a disturbance. or nuisance, as well as law 221 of 2015 and the ordinance of the Extraordinary Commissioner for Swine Fever which elevates the feeding of wild boars to a criminal sanction.

Now, however, given the phenomenon of swine fever and given that every day people are reported caught feeding wild boars, especially in the Letimbro area and on the stretch of beach adjacent to it, the mayor deems a new and more incisive provision appropriate .

Giving or leaving food, it is underlined, in fact, in the ordinance entails “a potential danger for the safety of bathers and users of the seaside promenade located a few meters away”. Not only that, the presence of these animals in the town center constitutes a source of permanent danger for all road users and encourages the penetration of animals into the urban context.

Finally, the ordinance reminds citizens and landowners of the duty to “keep the land clean and free from weeds” and gives the local police a mandate to enforce the provision.

“In addition to issuing today’s measure, which, we remind you, recalls a ban that is already in force – declares Mayor Russo – the Municipality has long banned access to the Letimbro riverbed to avoid interference between wild boars with their cubs and dogs or people and forwards the many reports we receive from citizens to the Regional Wildlife-Environmental Surveillance Unit. In fact, let us remember that the issue belongs to the competence of the Region which is the only entity that must provide for the regulation and management of the phenomenon. To this end, today we formally asked the Wildlife Sector and its regional wildlife-environmental surveillance unit to intervene to re-establish safety conditions within the urban context”.
