ABRUZZO – The Guides of Borsacchio are thrilled to announce the fourth edition of the Acqua di San Giovanni, which will be held on 23 June 2024. This event celebrates the tradition of Spring, an ancient custom linked to the summer solstice which symbolizes the rebirth, purification and protection.
Event Details
The excursion will start from Roseto and will wind along the ancient paths up to Montepagano, crossing the ridges and uncontaminated hills of the Borsacchio Reserve. The objective is to reach the historic Fonte d’Accolle, where, following ancient traditions, we will prepare the Acqua di San Giovanni. This practice involves the collection of flowers and aromatic herbs which, immersed in the water of the source, will form the precious liquid to be used the following day as a symbol of luck, health and good wishes for the future.
An Ancient Ritual
The Acqua di San Giovanni is a centuries-old tradition that celebrates the summer solstice. On the night between 23 and 24 June, according to legend, the water acquires beneficial properties. Prepared with flowers and herbs collected during the day, it is left outdoors under the dew to absorb its magic. This tradition represents the connection between man and nature, and the regenerative power of the earth.

The event is sponsored by the Abruzzo Region, the Province of Teramo and the Municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi. Thanks to the efforts of the volunteers, the fountain will be cleaned on the Saturday before the event to welcome visitors in the best possible way.
Participation
Participation in the event is free and free, and no reservation is necessary. We recommend that all participants bring a glass jar to collect the flower water. The meeting is at 6pm in via Accolle, near the car park of the former nursery school. From there, we will begin the climb along the ancient route, arriving at the source scheduled for 7pm, where preparations and explanations on the properties of the various essences will follow. The return is free and scheduled for 7.30pm.
