Modica, request for reopening of the municipal slaughterhouse

MODICA – Two weeks have already passed since closure of the municipal slaughterhouse of Modica ordered by the extraordinary commissioner of the ASP of Ragusa following various investigations carried out at the slaughter plant in the artisanal area of the Michelica district, including the latest one by the Nas Carabinieri Command on May 21st.

Same provision by the Municipality of Modica, which in turn ordered the closure of the structure with immediate effect but also the termination of the assignment contract of the management of the municipal slaughterhouse to the entrusted company.

Slaughterhouse management it had, in fact, been entrusted to a private company for six months with an ordinance of the Municipality of Modica dated 16 November 2023 which provided for the end of the contract on 27 May.

Modica municipal slaughterhouse closed, inconvenience

Obviously an extension of the same was expected and instead the closure order arrived which is causing problems real inconveniences not only to the foster company but to an entire community since the slaughterhouse will remain closed waiting for a new tender to be issued.

In short, the question of closure will remain pending at least until a solution is found that can satisfy all parties. The entrusted company, in fact, has started a close dialogue with the administrations involved, Asp Ragusa and the Municipality of Modica, “in order to resolve, with a spirit of responsibility and a spirit of collaboration, any possible problem and thus allow the fastest restoration of slaughter activity in the cityin full compliance with the needs of protecting the health of citizens and the well-being of animals and together for the benefit of the community of Modica breeders and all the workers involved”.

This can be seen from a statement that the management company’s defense lawyers released to clarify their client’s position. At stake is the possibility, in the moment an agreement is reached and the company takes care of resolving the disputed problems to regain management of the slaughterhouse at least until September when the tender will be presented.

This it would avoid the closure of the municipal slaughterhouse throughout the summer with the obvious difficulties that this would entail for Modica farmers forced to slaughter outside the city. In short, there is a desire on the part of the parties involved to reach a solution that does not harm anyone and at the same time guarantees all safety measures for the health of consumers and animals.
