Turin, stadium hub: rent expiring in 2025, purchase not convenient

The municipality is pushing for a purchase, but the plant is burdened with over 30 million mortgages

Among the dossiers opened at Toro there is also the one relating to the Olimpico-Grande Torino stadium. In fact, the agreement signed by Toro and the City of Turin for the rental of the Olimpico Grande Torino will expire on 30 June 2025. The current contract provides for the granata to pay a fee of 500 thousand euros, but the figure is destined to rise in the future. “We don’t know the extent yet, but it will certainly need to be reviewed in light of the current situation”the sports councilor Domenico Carretta explained in recent weeks in an interview in the columns of The print.

Purchase hypothesis? More than 30 million mortgages

Toro will therefore have to find a new agreement with the municipality for the rent of the stadium and there will be a year to find the solution. At the moment, however, a purchase by the company appears impracticable, a solution hoped for on several occasions in the past by the mayor Stefano Lo Russo. Discussions between the parties are ongoing, but to date the obstacles to overcome are different and important. Of particular note are the over 30 million mortgages encumbering the stadium, a situation which inevitably drives away any possible buyer.

Stadium subject to architectural restrictions

Mortgages are the first and very important obstacle to overcome, but certainly not the only one. Today it is difficult to imagine what advantages the company can derive from the purchase of the stadium, a functional facility but far from modern and with many defects. The Grande Torino would require various interventions to make it a facility comparable to those being designed today in the rest of Europe, but investments would be needed and the impossibility of touching the structure would have to be taken into account. Since 2013, the stadium has been subjected to architectural restrictions by the Ministry of Culture. A further reason to discourage the company from purchasing. Discussions regarding the future of the plant will therefore continue, but to date there are no conditions to go beyond a new lease.
