Organ and tissue donations: the Regional Transplant Center rewards the Asst Ovest Milanese

The Regional Transplant Center awarded the Asst Ovest Milanese for their commitment to the “procurement of organs and tissues” activity during 2023. A recognition that arrived after the award was handed over “Donation star” delivered in April by the Transplant Foundation. The latter ceremony was held in the Stemmi Hall of Palazzo Malinverni in Legnano.

«Thanks to the exceptional work of our Centre, 50 patients had the opportunity to receive the precious gift of a new organ, while 608 tissue harvests helped improve the lives of almost 4,200 people – explains the satisfied general director of ASST Ovest Milanese, Francesco Laurelli -. This extraordinary achievement would not have been possible without the sensitivity, professionalism and dedication of all the doctors and healthcare workers involved in this noble activity. Their tenacity, their team spirit and their profound humanity have made it possible to give hope and new life to thousands of people. I express my heartfelt thanks to all the healthcare workers who contributed to this exceptional result. Their commitment represents an invaluable value for the entire community and a source of great pride for our ASST.”

Donation numbers in 2023

In 2023, the Asst Ovest Milanese recorded a significant increase in donations compared to the previous year, with a total of 68 donated organs: 38 kidneys, 20 livers and 10 lungs (40 of 2022). Added to these donations are 266 tissues, including 231 corneas, 9 portions of skin, 8 pulmonary valves, 8 musculoskeletal tissues, 7 aortic valves and 3 vascular tissues, significantly exceeding the 128 tissues donated the previous year. In general the donations come from 29 people.

The cord blood collected in the Obstetrics in Legnano

Stem cells can potentially regenerate bone marrow damaged or destroyed due to severe diseases, such as leukemia and lymphoma. The donation itself is not invasive: after the birth of the baby and the cutting of the umbilical cord, the cord blood is collected. In 2023, the Legnano Obstetrics staff collected 70 bags of blood: 18 were used on the oncology front.
