Waste abandoned in the municipal villa in Matera

Mayor Bennardi and councilor Amenta threaten to close the park

Bags of wet waste, old bags, shoes, knives and hammers: these are just some of the waste found near the urban waste bins of the “Unità d’Italia” municipal villa in Matera, Basilicata. Despite the installation of four new surveillance cameras, indiscriminate littering by unknown persons continues to be a problem. The mayor Domenico Bennardi and the councilor for urban hygiene Massimiliano Amenta harshly condemn this uncivilized behavior, underlining how the municipal villa is frequented by children and elderly people, especially during the hot summer days.

«A very serious fact – explain the administrators – which has not suffered any decline, not even after installing the cameras, which are mainly useful for preventing the commission of crimes, guaranteeing greater safety for those who frequent the municipal park. The abandonment of waste is a behavior punishable as “wrong disposal”, therefore of an administrative and not criminal nature. The cameras are used to prevent and detect the commission of crimes that threaten public safety. Hence our umpteenth appeal to respect the municipal park, disposing of waste correctly, without forcing ourselves to militarize that urban space which belongs to everyone. The municipal villa is not a landfill. Due to the fault of a few uncivilized people – Bennardi and Amenta conclude bitterly – we would not like to be forced to close in the evening precisely in conjunction with the start of summer and the Bruna festival. A decision we don’t want to reach, but if these acts of incivility continue we will probably be forced to do so.”
