Plastic confetti thrown everywhere, noise, glass bottles and disposable glasses abandoned everywhere, situations on the edge of civilization. Unfortunately, these scenarios are repeated in a vast majority of Italian universities, and in the recent past even the University of Varese has not been immune. At the University of Bergamo, exasperated by these attitudes, the Academic Senate has decided to suspend all activities relating to the ceremonies for the proclamation of three-year degrees.
This is why it is “newsworthy” that theUniversity of Insubria one was held engineering degree session important not only for the brilliant academic results of the new graduates, but also for their behavior during the celebrations.
The reason is that at the University of Insubria it was decided to address the topic with a participatory model that promoted a profitable synergy between different “actors”. In fact, a working group was set up within the University which involves delegates from the Rector, teachers and technical-administrative staff, student associations but also representatives of the Provincial Waste Observatory, of the Municipality of Varese and social cooperatives, volunteers and representatives of civil society. The aim: to provide detailed information and make graduating students and their friends and family members responsible on the topic, in a direct and frank relationship between the President of the Commission and the students, thanks also to the availability of the Ecological Guards to provide information and suggestions.
The “recipes” used in this initial phase of experimentation and awareness-raising have already given more than satisfactory results, precisely in the engineering degree session: after the usual proclamation ceremony, characterized by intense emotions rightly expressed to underline an important moment that seals the end of the university course but also an important moment in life, the new graduates and their families have in fact started the celebrations in the name of sobriety and respect for the environment, as well as respect for the university community and more generally for the Bizzozero neighborhood and the city of Varese.
The new engineers – For the record: Federica Angì (110 and praise), Chiara Mischiatti (110 and praise), Elisa Zonda (110 and praise), Giada Cumetti, Pierrenicola Gatto (110 and praise), Simone Gessa, Matteo Mezzanzanica, Matteo Prati and Giorgio Tartaglia – thus inaugurated their life as graduates in the best possible way, providing an important “good example”.
One of the most positive and noteworthy aspects was in particular theabsence of plastic confettioften used on these occasions and causing environmental pollution, demonstrating an environmental awareness in line with the sustainability values promoted by the University of Insubria, member of the Network of Universities for Sustainable Development (RUS).
The day ended with hugs, smiles and the usual photos for the recent graduates in Safety and Environmental Engineering and Environmental Engineering and for the sustainability of work environments, but above all with the satisfaction of having celebrated such an important moment respectfully and consciously.
The choice to celebrate without excesses and without leaving traces of waste received the approval not only of the teaching staff, but also of the citizens of Varese, who appreciated the young people’s commitment to preserving the cleanliness and decorum of the city. The President of the Graduation Commission Vincenzo Torretta expressed his pride in the new graduates, underlining how their behavior represents a positive example for all students. “These young engineers have not only demonstrated academic excellence, but also a deep respect for the environment and community. I am proud of them and certain that they will continue to stand out in their future professional careers » she declared. Now we just have to wait for positive responses from the other degree courses of the University, in a meritorious competition of civilization.
