arrested. In 2002 in Sassari he killed Monica Moretti who had rejected him

He returns to freedom after 22 years served for murder in prison for killing a woman who had rejected him in Sardinia, and in Rome he persecutes a girl he met behind bars during interviews with relatives because she was engaged to another inmate. Raimondo Gaspa, 53 years old, he was arrested again by the police on orders from the Prosecutor’s Office. The soldiers of the Montespaccato station and the Trastevere company carried out the precautionary measure against him and the man returned to prison.

Killed in her home in Sassari

In 2002 Gaspa was arrested for the murder of Monica Moretti, a 38-year-old urologist serving at the local health authority. The man, separated and with a son with health problems, was hospitalized in her ward but was not her patient. According to the prosecution, he began calling her anonymously to approach her, to the point of exasperating the victim who was on the verge of reporting him, but he didn’t make it in time. The professional was killed in her home in the center of Sassari with 51 stab wounds, then the murderer set fire to the mattress on which her body was lying in an attempt to erase her traces, but he failed and was arrested. He first denied it, then admitted everything, also because he was framed by the phone calls made to the doctor. «I called her, she didn’t want to meet me. She didn’t want to know anything about me,” Gaspa said before being sentenced.

The precautionary measure

The Moretti murder has, in spite of itself, become a milestone in the study, including legal studies, of stalking cases and the psychiatric and judicial evolution of cases of violence against women. In Rome, as soon as the report from the latest victim was received, the Carabinieri immediately carried out a series of rapid investigations which allowed the specialized pool of the Prosecutor’s Office to request and obtain a precautionary measure from the investigating judge given the urgency of the situation.

Call just outside Rebibbia

From the 20-year-old’s complaint it emerges that the persecutory acts began as soon as the prisoner was released from Rebibbia on April 21st. Telephone harassment with heavy offers of sexual services, as the police found, so much so as to push the young woman to change residence. At this point the “red code” of the Prosecutor’s Office was triggered given the girl’s “state of anxiety and concern as well as fear for her own safety and that of her relatives”, “also forcing her to alter her life habits”.

The investigating judge: «He reproduced the same conduct as in 2002»

Two phone calls on the day of his release, another anonymous one on May 9th. “I saw you at the supermarket,” the man told her. And then other anonymous phone calls on May 21st using different numbers. For the investigating judge, Gaspa «to date appears to be drawn from an irrepressible criminal impulse which led him to reproduce, a few hours after his release from prison after 22 years restricted for the voluntary murder of the woman he had fallen in love with in 2002, serious illicit conduct engaging in criminal behavior that denotes a truly serial nature.”
