Torre del Greco city for tourism: work and resources ready

«Torre del Greco is a tourist city!». But on paper, for now. He defines it as a council resolution, led by the mayor of Piddino Luigi Mennella, approved in the last few hours. A tourist city on paper and potentially, given the existing resources which have contributed – based on a regional act – to designating the city as a place responsible for welcoming thousands of visitors.

It all started with national measures, adopted a few months after the explosion of the Coronavirus pandemic. With a specific law it was established that «the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) – we read in the resolution signed by the mayor and the manager Gaetano Camarda – defines a classification of economic activities, with reference to areas with high tourist density, in order to highlight the territorial tourism connection”.

So Istat drew up the relevant list based on various characteristics. On the basis of this, in December 2022, the regional council drew up the list of tourist municipalities in Campania, including Torre del Greco. The Torrese executive then took note of the regional resolution.

The resolution

«A necessary and very important decision for our city – underlines the mayor Luigi Mennella – as it will allow us to promote a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing our territory, as well as allowing us to be able to apply for specific funding dedicated precisely to the development of the ‘tourist offer”. But, to make the objective concrete, a lot of work needs to be done on improving the attractions.

Starting from the sea of the Litoranea, which was under attack in the 1950s but which has now been devalued due to pollution. The hope, however, of a clean sea could be the ongoing Gori project, financed for 35 million euros by the Region, which involves the collection of the city’s wastewater with the Foce Sarno purifier. Precisely in these hours key interventions were completed in Torre del Greco. Then there are the archaeological sites such as Villa Sora and historical-cultural sites such as Villa delle Ginestre, the residence where the poet Giacomo Leopardi spent the last years of his life. Even these sites, neglected for years, are now managed by the Ente Ville Vesuviane Foundation. Then we need to plan useful actions to strengthen all resources. This is why the Commerce District is at work.

The incentives

«We immediately got to work on the status of the incentives for production activities – said Gianmarco Del Prato, municipal manager of the District – and, having identified the regional resolution, we started the process. We are now thinking about the regulation for the possible tourist tax and the taxes deriving from the new revenues will all be allocated to tourism. Next year a chapter of the budget must be allocated to the sector, it is an opportunity for citizens strongly desired by the administration”.

«Our city has the opportunity to demonstrate – he said Giulio Esposito, president of Ascom – how tourism can be a powerful driving force for economic development, with positive repercussions on the local economy. To fully exploit the potential (coral, sites, food and wine), however, it will be essential to strengthen the skills and capabilities of local economic operators. Furthermore, it is necessary to improve the quality of services and integrate public and private services to guarantee an adequate tourist offer.”
