We are in Trento prison experiencing a period of great tension due to an escalation of violence by prisoners against serving staff.

After serious episode a few days ago, where an Italian prisoner attacked an officer by putting his hands around his neck and attempting to setting himself on fire of a North African saved by the officers who got burned, a new accident occurred yesterday afternoon, around 2pm.

During the last episode, two policemen were injured and taken to the emergency room. Both were treated and discharged with a cervical collar and a seven-day prognosis. The person responsible for the attacks is an Italian prisoner who reacted violently when the staff denied him, without justification and authorization, a room transfer.

Massimiliano Rosa, provincial secretary of Sappe Trento, explained what happened: “The inmate, impaired, attacked a prison police officer by first pushing him, then hitting him violently in the face and neck. A second officer, who intervened to help his colleague, was also attacked, receiving slaps and punches with unprecedented violence.”

Sappe expressed closeness and solidarity to his injured colleagueswishing them a speedy recovery. The USPP union also expressed concern about the situation, denouncing: “The situation is now at its limit and every day we witness critical events that are difficult to manage. Only thanks to the professionalism of the prison police staff can the damage be limited. We are sincerely concerned about what is happening.”

The union called for an immediate transfer of the violent prisoner and invited the institutions to report the critical situation of the Trento prison in the appropriate places.

Security management within prison has become an urgent issue, which requires immediate action to protect staff and restore order.

The director of the prison contacted by our editorial staff he had defined the problematic situation as not out of control. «Unfortunately we try to limit these episodes with the tools we have available, with regulations which are often not very stringent. In all Italian prisons the situation is identical.” “The prison – Dr. Nuzzaci had explained – is the mirror of society, and after the pandemic, as outside, even in prisons there are increasing episodes of intolerance, irritability and nervousness.”

Annarita Nuzzaci announced that three new educators are arriving: «So it will become 8 and it will be a nice oxygen valve. Then new penitentiary units are also arriving and the new pro tempore commander has been chosen and will arrive perhaps as early as next week.”

The increase in educators will guarantee more free time activities for prisoners inside the prison which will perhaps ease the tension. We have already started with a soccer match between lawyers, lawyers and prisoners: for the record it ended 3 to 1 for the prisoners.

Let’s hope it’s a good start for the rest too. Even if these measures seem unlikely to resolve the serious problems of the Spini prison
