At the end. “After all” because Viareggio was the last municipality to determine the increases in the waste tariff – in Piazza Nieri and Paolini it took them over a month longer than their “neighbors” in the Versilia district -; as regards the “dessert”, however, it is difficult to smile when the bills to pay arrive, but at least in Viareggio you avoid chewing bitterness. The time that the offices took to make ends meet, in fact, was well spent: in Viareggio, a unique case among the municipalities of the Ato Costa, the Tari remains unchanged.

The result that allows the waste tariff to be kept at last year’s levels is the result of painstaking work led personally by the mayor Giorgio Del Ghingaro: no increase in costs borne by citizens, who can therefore breathe a sigh of relief given the increases resulting from the new Arera calculation and applied by many Municipalities.

“The result was obtained thanks to the careful work, both technical and political, of the municipal administration – we read in a note from the institution – which rejected a first economic and financial plan (Pef) proposed by AtoToscana Costa. This plan provided for an increase in the Viareggio tariff of approximately 10 percent”. A bit of a drain on many families in the city, especially in an unfavorable situation that sees more and more people sailing by sight.

At that point, Viareggio presented its counter-proposal, supporting it with the fruit of the painstaking work of the offices. “The administration, after having spoken with Ato and with the Reti Ambiente manager, managed to demonstrate the correctness of its assessments and consequently was able to bring the tariff back within the limits of that of 2023. The remodulation was possible both due to the careful policies environmental measures implemented, with door-to-door separate waste collection, and for the timely work of recovering evasion”.

And this explains the reason why Viareggio arrived several weeks after the other municipalities in the Versilia area. “The negotiation went on for several months and saw the municipality of Viareggio postpone the approval of the tariffs until June”, until the desired result was obtained: the economic and financial plan was calculated at just under 20 million (19,847,632 euro), which allows the TARI rate to be kept unchanged compared to last year. In the face of a possible double-digit percentage increase feared by the most pessimistic analyses, therefore, in Viareggio the waste tax bills will maintain the same weight.

“It was an important job, which involved various professionals – explains the mayor Giorgio Del Ghingaro – but I would also like to underline Ato’s willingness to reevaluate its calculations and maximum collaboration, in order to be able to offer the municipality of Viareggio, and consequently, the citizens receive the best service at the best price – concludes the mayor –; we are happy with the result achieved”. The next step will be the passage to the Resources Commission, followed by the approval of the documents in the city council. Stretching a little the meaning of the parable of the vineyard (Matthew; 20.16), “blessed are the last for they will be first”.
