A kick to war starting from the green rectangle. The first World Championship for Peace kicked off today at the Alfio Branda in Prepo. with the opening match between Italy and Senegal, followed by the match between Ecuador and Ivory Coast. National anthems before each match, complete with typical ceremonies to follow.
Spectacular choreography and infernal cheering in the stands. A dream that became reality thanks above all to the will of Enrico Ganje, former midfielder of Spoleto and Castel Rigone, in the season just ended in Piccione. “There are many African communities in Perugia and in Umbria in general. In such a difficult moment for international peace – underlines Ganje – we thought we would launch, in our small way, a message by exploiting the passion that unites us all: football. I take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors who supported us, the FIGC Regional Committee and the Municipality of Perugia who sponsored the initiative”.
Eight national teams are at the start: Equador, Senegal, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Italy (group A), Congo, Gambia, Peru and Cameroon (group B) who will compete until July 13th, taking to the field every weekend. Watch out for the heat factor but from that point of view the good Enrico reassures everyone: “We Africans are used to…”.
