(ANSA) – SASSARI, JUNE 15 – An inmate of the Bancali prison in Sassari committed suicide by hanging himself with sheets in the hospital-type ward inside the penitentiary institute. Gennarino De Fazio, general secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police, gives the news, underlining that this is the 44th inmate suicide during the year in Italy, the fourth in just over 24 hours. “Crazy numbers, unworthy of a civilized country”, he denounces. “We no longer have words to comment on and appeal to the sensitivity of politics – writes de Fazio in a note – In the face of all this, in fact, two great beings stand out, the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, and the Meloni government. Suicides, murders, brawls, assaults, rapes, illicit trafficking, but what else must happen for the executive to take note of the existing emergency and various consequential measures? Is a decree-law urgently needed – urges the number one of Uilpa – to allow deflation of prison density, there are over 14 thousand more prisoners than the useful capacity. Extraordinary and accelerated hiring is needed in the penitentiary police force, which is missing at least 18 thousand units, and the strengthening of healthcare, especially psychiatric care, which is in a very deep crisis. Structural reforms must be initiated. We are in a massacre”, concludes De Fazio. (HANDLE).
