On Friday afternoon (14 June) the police officers referred a foreign citizen to the judicial authorities after she was caught while she was trying to sell an elusive branded smartphone in the streets of the centre. The woman had approached passers-by proposing what she said would be a real deal: the purchase of an iPhone at a very advantageous price.
Too bad that the device, in reality, was “fake”. Not a cell phone from the well-known Apple brand: what the 27-year-old was trying to sell was a mere imitation. One Bait and switchin short, used to make easy money.
But passers-by didn’t fall for it. In addition to avoiding the scam, some of them reported the presence of the so-called seller to the contingent of soldiers deployed in the center as part of Operation Safe Roads. The men in camouflage, who had been told about the attempted negotiations, in turn notified the state police. A patrol present nearby immediately rushed to the scene.
The agents intervened within a few minutes: upon their arrival, the 27-year-old was still in Via Roma with her smartphone in her hand, hoping to sell it to some naive buyer. The cell phone ended up being seized, while the owner got a complaint for trade in products with false signs. This is a crime punished with a certain severity by Italian law: the penalty is imprisonment for up to one year and a fine ranging from a minimum of 3,500 euros to a maximum of 35 thousand.
