After spending 15 months in prison in Budapest and 20 days under house arrest, Ilaria Salis is finally free and ready to return to Italy. She is expected to return by Monday 17 June, her 40th birthday. Some unconfirmed rumors suggest that she could land as early as this afternoon in Orio al Serio.
The revocation of the arrests and the suspension of the trial
Yesterday, surprisingly, the Hungarian police left her home in Budapest, after having removed her electronic bracelet. Accepting the request of her Hungarian lawyer Gyorgy Magyar, presented immediately after her election as an MEP, judge Jozsef Sós took note of the parliamentary immunity of the newly elected MP with Avs, and ordered the revocation of house arrest and the suspension of the trial . At least for now. Because, as her father, Roberto Salis, underlined yesterday, “Ilaria is happy, we are all happy but the battle is not over yet, it is just suspended”. Meanwhile, the undersecretary of the Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orbán has already previously hoped for the request for authorization to proceed to the European Parliament from the judiciary of his country, to obtain the revocation of the immunity of the new MP. The 39-year-old, accused in Hungary of multiple aggravated injuries for her alleged participation in the clashes on 10 February 2023 in Budapest with European neo-Nazis on the eve of the “Tag der Ehre”, will be welcomed in Italy by Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni, who strongly wanted his candidacy for the European Parliament was rewarded by voters with over 176,000 preferences.
