Taranto and the G7: a city off course

There trip of the relatives of the world’s greats has just touched the city of Taranto: a look at the ceramics district of Grottaglie and a trip to the Doge’s Palace Martina Franca. Perhaps the tour would have also deserved an episode at least at archaeological Museum of Taranto. It is true that organizing an out-of-town excursion in such safe conditions and in such a short timeframe cannot be a simple operation. But the fact that Taranto was a city substantially ignored it is perhaps symptomatic of the work that still needs to be done so that the provincial capital is perceived as historical-cultural destination important and worthy of being visited even by the greats of the G7.

It is also true that we have a lot of work to do, especially onpolitical authority to influence certain choices. Not to mention the marketing: just look at how the name of a resort, Borgo Egnaziais now understood as a locality, with all due respect to Savelletri which instead is the fraction of Fasano which is hosting the G7 and which includes the plastic tourist village created from nothing.

This is to say that you can’t invent a tourist city overnight and that there’s no point in constantly publishing photographs of the crystal clear sea of the coast road if there are no adequate services and decent roads.

Just as there is a need to overcome that form of bipolarism of those who, on the one hand, in a self-referential impetus extol that crystalline sea and the tourist vocation (in truth still to be demonstrated) of the city and on the other, this time in a zeal formidable self-harmcontinues to spread the image of “torn city” most polluted in the world. The two things don’t go together. A little common sense is needed.

For the moment, while waiting for more authentic tourist flows in the glossy Puglia of Borgo Egnazia, let’s settle for overnight stays of Zelensky on the Little Sea. Hoping you appreciated it.
