“Politics? It shouldn’t cause damage”

FANO

by Anna Marchetti

Braggart, sometimes liar, vain, but sincere in his feelings, especially when talking about Carnival and Fano. We are talking about the Vulòn, the official mask of the Fano Carnival which since 2019 has been played by the amateur actor Simone Diotallevi. The Vulòn expresses the common feeling of a city that “does not need big things, but simplicity and serenity, tidy gardens and well-kept streets”.

The qualities of Fano told by Vulòn…

“They suggest to all those who come to Fano to book an appointment with the notary because they will fall in love with our city and want to buy a house: we live in a magnificent place. The main characteristic of Fano is the climate of serenity that you can breathe. When I was in Sanremo to all the people I met and in all the interviews I conducted I told them that in Fano you eat well, you drink better, you have fun at the Carnival and if that wasn’t enough, in addition to the sea we also have the hills”.

Happy to play the Carnival mask and be the ambassador of the event and your city? “Of course I’m happy with the character I play, with all its strengths and weaknesses. I always say that a day spent at the Fano Carnival is better than seven days at the spa. Fano is a city that gives serenity, a sense of relaxation, above all in some particular places such as on the beach – we are lucky enough to be able to choose between sand, small and large stones, rocks – or in certain corners of the historic center such as the redeveloped Piazza Marcolini”.

The most difficult thing for Vulòn?

“Putting on the costume requires the help of two or three people. Then you need a lot of imagination and exuberance, among children the Vulòn has become a superhero”

Doesn’t El Vulòn in Fano tell lies?

“In reality, in this case, it is not Vulòn who is speaking so much as Simone. We have a beautiful city and politicians are only asked not to do damage. I hope very much in the young mayor Luca Serfilippi, he has eyes that shine, he believes in what he does, I hope he doesn’t let himself be influenced or subjected to external pressure. Doing politics is complicated, if there’s no passion it’s better not to do it, he has to give himself to the public to get feedback, anyway it applies to the teacher with the students and for the politician with the citizens”.

Vulòn’s wish to the city…

“We live in a magical place even if many don’t seem to be aware of it. Just think that when the film Gli Sbancati was screened for the first time, a large part of the public didn’t realize that it was all filmed in Fano. We have a wonderful city that it needs people who love it and don’t do damage. I want to dedicate a final thought to VAT numbers, the driving force of the economy”.
