Sewer into the sea: Municipality prohibits bathing in two places on the Crotone coast

CROTONE – Bathing in the city’s stretch of sea is prohibited in only two places: in front of the old Coni swimming pool and in front of the cemetery which has been found to be polluted by sewage discharges. This is what is stated in the ordinance issued by Mayor Voce on 13 June. The bathing ban is temporary and will therefore remain in force until further notice from the authorities. The need for the provision, which comes at the very beginning of the summer season, is dictated by the result of the analyzes carried out by Arpacal on samples of sea water taken last Tuesday, 12 June, in the affected sections in which traces of “Escherichia coli” and “intestinal enterococci”. In short, the typical sewage discharges ended up in the sea probably due to poor functioning of the lifting pumps. It should be noted that the sewage spill in some stretches of the city’s seafront beach, and from there into the sea, had been reported by the Consenso municipal councilor Enrico Pedace, already on Saturday 8 June. The samples, however, were taken only four days later and it was necessary to wait a fifth of them before bathing was banned. In the meantime, the people of Crotone continued to calmly dive into the water.

In fact, only from Thursday 13 June did the appropriate bathing ban signs appear, issued by the union ordinance, and on the same date the ban was notified to the managers of the bathing establishments located on the polluted stretch of coast.
