Since the beginning of 2024, the “Sant’Anna e San Sebastiano” Hospital of Caserta has carried out 3 multi-organ harvests out of 8 brain death observations. These interventions, made possible by the generosity of donors and their families, have increased life expectancy for many patients waiting for a transplant. Furthermore, 35 declarations of intent from citizens for the donation of organs, tissues and cells were collected.

This data will be at the center of the training conference entitled “Organ Donation: Implementing Culture and Safety in Donation and Transplantation,” which will be held on Monday 17 June in the hospital’s main hall. The event aims to promote the culture of organ donation.

“The initiative is among the numerous activities undertaken by the AORN of Caserta to increase the number of donors, constituting a priority objective to be pursued,” declared the Health Director Angela Annecchiarico. Annecchiarico has given a strong boost to the sector, working with passion and determination together with a multidisciplinary team created specifically for organ donation activities. This team includes healthcare workers coordinated by Patrizia Tidona, Local Coordinator of Organ and Tissue Donations, and Giovanna Verrillo, Representative of the Transplant Friendly Help Desk.

The scientific event is organized in collaboration with the Regional Transplant Center of Campania and will be divided into three sessions. These sessions will describe the organizational and operational machine of the Caserta AORN through the reports of directors, specialists, nurses and technicians of the hospital’s operational units, together with the representation of the Regional Transplant Center, represented by Dr. Barbara Leone and Dr. Vincenzo Del Giudice.

The first session will examine the role of the Transplant Friendly Help Desk and the Regional Transplant Centre, with a focus on organizational and communication aspects, coordinated by the Local Coordinator. The second session will delve into the medical, medico-legal, technical and nursing aspects of the brain death observation process, the maintenance of the organs to be removed and the procurement process, illustrating the national guidelines regarding donor suitability and evaluation. The third session will focus on corneal harvesting and follow-up activities for liver and kidney transplant recipients.

“The Symposium,” declare the organizers Tidona and Verrillo, “aims to promote and nurture the culture of organ donation, starting from the operators of our hospital, so that everyone, by sharing it, can be its ambassador. Transplants save lives, but without organ donation, there can be no transplants: this is our message, our mantra.”

The conference work, which will begin at 8.45 am, will be introduced by the greetings of the Strategic Management. This will be followed by the report by Dr. Anna Fabrizio, who for over twenty years has been the driving force behind the donation process in the AORN of Caserta as head of Organ and Tissue Donation Coordination.
