“Give me a smile” and the pacemaker festival

Prato, 14 June 2024 – The warm atmosphere of the “Gli Alberi” restaurant in Calenzano recently welcomed a special evening dedicated to the race assistants, better known as pacemakers or hares, who set the pace of the foot races.

These athletes, coming from all over Tuscany, came together to celebrate a year of sporting activity in the name of solidarity and mutual support. Throughout the year, pacemakers played a vital role in the region’s major half marathons, assisting runners in maintaining the right pace and helping them achieve their best performances. “Your activity is a great gift of solidarity,” declared Piero Giacomelli, president of ETS “Give me a Smile”. “

What other gift is more precious for the runner than being helped in carrying out one’s passion?” Giacomelli emphasized how being a pacemaker represents a unique act of altruism: a way to give oneself completely to others, so that they can realize their sporting dreams. This noble activity was appreciated not only by runners but also by the organizers of the main Tuscan half marathons, including events in Florence, Prato, Pisa, Pistoia, Montecatini, Scandicci and many other locations.

The “Give Me a Smile” smiley face logo has become a recognized and respected symbol in running competitions in the region.

In the year 2023, the association donated 30 defibrillators, a concrete gesture of commitment to the safety and health of athletes. The festive evening was enlivened by numerous anecdotes and race stories, told with enthusiasm and a great desire to return to racing, always with the aim of helping others. The pacemaker community has demonstrated once again that the passion for running can be transformed into a powerful tool of solidarity and generosity. In conclusion, the event represented not only an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the past year, but also to strengthen the bonds of friendship and collaboration between those who share the love of running and the desire to make a difference in lives of others. The mission of “Give me a Smile” continues, with the heart and determination of those who run not only for themselves, but for the common good.
