psychiatric prisoner attacks 3 policewomen

Foggia prison: inmate with psychiatric problems attacks and injures three prison officers

The episodes of violence inside the Foggia prison do not stop.
The last episode recorded and reported by the independent Penitentiary Police union (Sappe) occurred last Saturday, when a prisoner with psychiatric problems attacked three Penitentiary officers.

The dynamics of the aggression

According to what the union reports, the woman was carrying out an interview when she suddenly took possession of a bunch of keys, which she had taken by force.
When asked, in a polite manner, to return them, the inmate reacted by first attacking a policewoman – who ended up on the ground banging her head and elbows – and repeatedly kicking and punching two other officers, who suffered various bruises and scratches.
Even the inspector, who rushed to restore order, suffered some bruises.
The inmate had arrived in Foggia a few days ago, transferred from the Trani penitentiary institute, from where she had always been removed for similar episodes.

Take a beating and stay quiet

“Will anyone wonder how it is possible that three policewomen and an inspector did so much harm to a poor inmate?
Unfortunately the answer is simple, since if a prisoner attacks a policeman, causing him permanent damage, almost nothing happens since it is psychiatric, while if the policemen in this context try to defend themselves in a more active way, there is the risk that the judiciary, after having viewed a few seconds of recorded video and not the entire event, investigate those present for the crime of torture.
So for 1500 euros a month you have to take the beatings and keep quiet otherwise your life will be ruined forever”, the complaint from Sappe, who announced his intention to join as a civil party in the trial against the person responsible for the attack, also asking for “the conviction of the penitentiary administration, which instead of taking measures against the inmate who should have been transferred to a suitable center after committing the first attack, was sent on tour to the other penitentiaries in the region”.

The absence of ASL

“The Sappe will ask for the condemnation of the local health authorities, which by law must guarantee maximum care and treatment for people suffering from psychiatric pathologies, which, in fact, is systematically violated.
Just as it is unacceptable that there are dozens and dozens of prisoners with psychiatric problems (who cannot stay in prison) waiting to go to the REMS, but who cannot do so because there are not enough places”.
