From land of work to degradation, metalworkers’ strike in Caserta: «Safety, dignity and projects»

It’s been years since we’ve seen so many people take to the streets as one strike. Yesterday i metalworkers of the province of Caserta filled the streets of capital and crowded Piazza Dante where the national secretaries of Fim Cisl, Fiom Cgil and Uilm they held a rally. A mobilization proclaimed by the provincial secretaries of Fim, Fiom and Uilm, in light of the latest events and the crises that are affecting the metalworking industries of the area, first of all the Jabil which last April 30 declared its intention to close the plant Marcianise and just on Wednesday it experienced yet another dramatic transition to Mimit. But not only that, also for health and safety in the workplace, for the defense, consolidation and relaunch of all the metalworking realities of the province of Caserta, within the broader “Caserta dispute”. The procession of blue overalls, with union flags and banners of the various factories, started from Piazza Garibaldi and, after crossing the central streets of Caserta, ended in the very central Piazza Dante where, after the introduction of the provincial secretaries of Fim, Fiom and Uilm, Pino Scala, Francesco Percuoco And Ciro Pistonethere was testimony from workers Softlab, Jabil And Pcga for the automotive sector who reported their experience, different but with a single common denominator: the crisis of their companies. All three made a point of saying that their protest is not to obtain assistance and social safety nets, but work and dignity.

It then fell to the national secretaries of the triad of metalworkers, starting from Michele De Palma of Fiom CGIL who thanked the mayor of Marcianise Antonio Trombetta, present on stage, but also wondered where the other mayors and politicians of the area were. «We took to the streets – he said among other things De Palma – to defend the right to work of metalworkers and consequently of all citizens, because if we lose our jobs the whole economy stops. We must demonstrate that this dispute is not only the dispute of the workers of Caserta and the province, but from here we must build a national initiative that puts at the center the right of workers to work in the Noon».

After speaking about the ongoing disputes involving Jabil, Softlab and the automotive companies, De Palma concluded: «From today there is an issue that concerns the entire city of Caserta and the entire South, Fiom, with Fim and Uilm, will support the fight for the dignity of workers with all the necessary democratic tools.” The national secretary of Uilm took the floor, Rocco Palombella stated: «The Government and the Region have made Caserta one of the most neglected lands in the South, since Land of Work this land has become the land of degradation, until the 1990s it was considered the Brianza of the South, due to its position, skills and human capital, but here the necessary investments were not made, an asset that had great potential was not safeguarded. Until a few years ago theelectronics and the telecommunications they were the flagship of the industrial fabric of Caserta with over 4 thousand workers, today only Jabil remains which from 1,300 workers has reached 420 and also wants to leave, but we will not make any agreement for the transfer to other companies, the The government must make the multinational feel its full weight. As far as we are concerned, Jabil must continue to stay here, it must assume its social and industrial responsibilities. Here in Caserta we need projects shared by the Government, the Region and all the local institutions for the use of the Pnrr funds”.

The person who still emphasized the absence of politics at the demonstration was the national secretary of Fim Cisl Ferdinand Uliano who underlined: «It’s absurd, le institutions they must be among the workers, we don’t need meetings in regional or Roman buildings, we need to support the struggles we make to defend the workplace with precise choices, with industrial choices.” Speaking about Jabil, Uliano said: «Is it possible that the Government will not be able to force a multinational to which it assigned mountains of work commissions when it carried out the purchase of other companies to remain in Italy? The money is there, that of the Pnrr and that of industry 5.0.”
