The anti-degradation recipe for redeveloping the Monza square

Bivouacs, dirt, episodes of violence and petty crime. For many years the situation in Piazza Cambiaghi was like an open wound in the city. But now things could change. In fact, on Tuesday 25 June, work began on the construction of the construction site which in the space of a few months will give the people of Monza a completely new square. And above all cleaner and safer.

After the acquisition of the area by the municipality as a heritage site (after more than 30 years of discussion and disputes with the owners), the future of the area is therefore now completely to be rewritten. This was explained by the mayor Paolo Pilotto himself who, together with the other representatives of the council, officials and technicians of the municipality, wanted to be present for an inspection before closing the square and starting the works.

“The idea is for a square that can serve as a meeting place, more liveable for citizens, and that can host cultural and musical events and in continuity with the space of via Colombo”. And here is the point. In addition to the repair of the uneven pavement and the creation of ad hoc green spaces, the start of the construction site was in fact accompanied by the removal of those who in the square, especially in the space under the porticoes, were used to bivouacking, sleeping, listening to music, drinking and even doing their business.

“There was a first phase that we carried out with the police and social workers, aiming to get the homeless out of the wild encampment and directing those willing to get help in the reception facilities – he further explained the mayor – Now, with the start of the construction site, another phase will follow. In fact, cameras will be positioned for video surveillance and against illegal intrusions which will be accompanied by the anti-degradation prevention work carried out with the police forces. order. Which will characterize the layout of the space even after the end of the works”.

A square that will therefore be safer and monitored and that in the municipality’s view should therefore be more usable and liveable in a more peaceful manner for all citizens. “The constant presence of the police and the surveillance systems will serve to dissuade those who have so far used the square in an inappropriate manner” concluded Pilotto.

The path to changing the face of Piazza dei Monza could therefore be outlined. At least this is the hope of the administration after years of reports and controversies.
